In Georgia, health outcomes are significantly impacted by where you live and disproportionately correlated to other demographic dimensions, such as age, gender, race/ethnicity and citizenship status. Wellstar is the only health system in Georgia with an established Center for Health Equity. This Center activates system-wide strategies, initiatives and programs across service lines and in the community that address health disparities, with a current focus on access to care, behavioral health, food access and healthy living, pediatrics and women’s health.
We’re helping to ensure all Georgians have access to high-quality healthcare, behavioral health services, nutritious food, chronic disease management, housing, pediatrics, women’s health services and preventative care.
Wellstar Foundation is funding a two-year Food is Medicine pilot program at Douglas Graduate Medical Education facility to combat food insecurity and chronic disease, offering screenings, fresh vegetables and wellness coaching to patients diagnosed with diet related illnesses like diabetes, hypertension and obesity.
The Callaway Foundation awarded Wellstar Foundation a $1.1M grant to expand Small TALK, Wellstar's Literacy and Justice for All initiative, to affiliated Pediatrics and OB-GYN offices in West Georgia. Small TALK aims to improve high school graduation rates and social determinants of health by promoting early language development during the first three years of life, when 80% of brain development occurs.
Wellstar received a $5.5M grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources & Services Administration to reduce disparities in infant mortality and perinatal outcomes and enhance behavioral, mental and women's health. The program serves Spalding, Butts and Troup counties.
Georgia ranks 34 out of 50 for access to mental health services, and suicides among young Georgians have doubled over the last decade. Wellstar is committed to changing that — providing holistic care that promotes physical and mental well-being. We’re establishing an integrated approach to behavioral care that combines innovation, best practices and evidence-based treatments to offer care centered around the needs of the individual.
Wellstar Foundation received $2M from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to expand the Wellstar Zero Suicide Program. This program trains and equips clinicians and caregivers in our emergency departments and hospitals to recognize and provide the right care for patients presenting with a mental health crisis.
PGA Tour Golfer Kevin Kisner and his wife Brittany, committed $5.3M to establish developmental and behavioral health services for the pediatric behavioral health center at Wellstar Children's Hospital of Georgia.
With behavioral health needs among youth on the rise, grant funding provided from the Mary Alice and Bennett Brown Foundation is providing a way to integrate behavioral health services into pediatrics and offer additional resources and safety measures for youth struggling with their mental health.
